Real estate websites are undoubtedly the most important tool needed to sell real estate. Regardless of whether you are using a real estate agent or selling your property privately you need to make sure you have effective web presence for your property listing.
The quality of each of these websites varies substantially, not only in website functionality and design but also in the quality and variety of listings each has to offer.
Have a look at each of the websites highlighted in the list below and let us know which website you use or would use to search for property. If you could change something about your favourite website what would it be?

Well, obviously most of these web site have been around for a very long time and have done their testing and found what works for buyers and what doesn’t.
But i must say what really annoys me about realestate.com.au (which is one of the biggest) is a small point when trying to search for properties. In their ‘select property type’ search function they don’t have a multi-select feature, which mean i can only search ‘unit’ or ‘townhouses’…not both??? My question is why wouldn’t they have a multi-select feature?
Simple but it really annoys me when i have to do 2 individual searches for the different property types

steve, check out the myhome layout it has boxes you can tick, this would be a better layout for you. I don’t mind the realestate layout because you have a lot options on the left which help you choose what to select. I just hate the default red colour.

Thanks for leaving your “link” bob! An interesting concept which could be great for property owners wanting to sell and buy. Completely cuts out the need for agents!

Although http://www.realestate.com.au does have a lot of options for users to choose from (for searching for properties) which may confuse users, you can’t go past the fact that they have a tremendous amount of property listings meaning there is a wide variety of choice.
I recommend that everyone have a look at http://www.property.com.au which is owned by http://www.realestate.com.au and has the same property listings. The only difference is the way the listings are displayed, this website lets you search through a map, this technology is really cool.
I think these two websites are the best place to search for property.

I think the best search functionality is Domain as each region and area for every state is displayed. You can narrow you search to a region (Sydney Region) or Area (Northern Beaches) and it only shows the suburbs in this Area(s). It also allows you to select multiple areas and therefore suburbs from different areas.
The best website is http://www.onthehouse.com.au as they display past historical data (that is free) alongside property search results. They have only just started so they don’t have a huge amount of property data but over time once they build up it will be a great place to search for data.

For any real estate portal/website there are two search criteria that need to be addressed, location and type.
You need to find out where users want to search for property so state and then suburb/s and you need to find out what properties they are looking for so type, features and price.
Some websites combine these two search criteria into one function like REA while others search for location first and then property type like Domain.
My personal opinion is that users should search for location first and then property features after location has been found, the Domain model works well. Most of the Map based real estate portals use this method of searching, users enter the suburb or postcode they are interested in. All properties for this suburb appear and then users can filter the type of property through a side bar on the map.

You def. don’t need to look anywhere other than realestate and domain, these websites have everything you need to search and understand property. By searching for property on these websites i can be assured I am being provided a large representation of the properties on the market, i guess a small percentage of agents don’t use these website and obviously private sellers can’t list on them so a small number of properties aren’t there.

I agree that http://www.onthehouse.com.au is a terrific website. It is as though they have looked at all the other advertising websites and taken the good ideas out of them combining them with a few of their own to create a super real estate website.
What really makes this website stand out is that you can get past property sales data for a particular property you are interested in. Correct me if i am wrong but I am sure this is the only website on the internet who provides free sales data, right? I have been looking for a property for the past 6 months and actually paid for two reports from http://www.australianpropertymonitors.com.au, someone told me about this new websites and I was amazed i could get the same information for free.
This website also allows you to adjust the layout of the property results to your personal liking. Thumbs up to http://www.onthehouse.com.au

Our agency receives a large number of inquiries through http://www.realestateguide.com.au. This was quite a surprise to us when we first joined up to the subscription. Although another agent reported she receives more enquiries from this website than she does from any other we were quite skeptical. The results have been a lot better than expected and this proves that small real estate portals can be affective for marketing real estate.

The majority of these websites appear to be reasonably popular amongst users, I would be interested to see some figures regarding what number of properties are sold using the classified websites you have highlighted.

The majority of real estate agents do not advertise properties on classified websites because they have access to the market leader in real estate portals (realestate.com.au and domain.com.au).
The majority (around 98%) of listings on classified websites are private sellers. The most popular in Australia is Gumtree followed by Craig’s List across the world.
A large amount of property owners have reported positive results from advertising their property on ebay. This can be expected due to the large audience which ebay can attract.
The best thing about most classified websites is that they are free to list your property and because they have a variety of other products for sale or lease they usually reach a good audience.
